Growing up with immediate family stuck in addiction and, navigating life with emotional confusion and disconnect has been a part of my story. Heart wrenching is how I would describe losing an immediate family member. Navigating the grief of losing someone close to you can be challenging and overwhelming. There were feelings of hurt and betrayal and, at the same time, the invisible bond that desired emotional closeness and a longing for a trusting friendship. Followed by the grief of a dream lost. I am happy to say that is not my whole story. I can still live in the present and feel joy. As some support groups would say, I am in my giving back phase of recovery and, excited to share tools with others to help navigate, reclaim and, write a new story.
My Story
I lost my brother due to alcoholism as he lived a life trying to self medicate. He had started experimenting with drugs as a teenager and went through the school of shaping up in the military. It would not be surprising if he also had PTSD. Whatever mental health challenges he had, he forged on undiagnosed, due to stigma, shame and fear that shrouded our generation. The belief that "there is something wrong with you" if you have to get help, pulled the rug out from an opportunity to acquire the proper care. This is one big reason I am so passionate today about releasing stigma around mental health. We have first aid kits for physical injuries. Why don't we have mental health kits to help us better identify our needs or, when it would be appropriate to reach for help? I am collaborating with my Mom for her seamstress skills and, my daughter for her marketing, mini-print and artistic skills, combined with my passion for this work and love for explaining things so that anyone gets it.
